Home is where the heart is, and what better place to capture your family’s essence than in the comfort of your own space? In-home family photography sessions offer a unique opportunity to document the everyday moments, the laughter, and the connections that make a house a home. Here are 7 reasons you may choose to do an in-home session this year.

1. The weather is not ideal

Maybe it’s winter, or a particularly rainy season in your area, but you still need updated family photos. Instead of dressing for the elements, let your photographer come to you. During the holidays, you can even incorporate decorations and holiday activities into your session. Whether it’s snuggling on the couch, baking together in the kitchen, or playing games by the Christmas tree, in-home family sessions during the winter months make family photos both personal and comfortable.

2. You want your kids to feel at ease

There is nothing like a kid in their natural environment. With an in-home family session, all of your kid’s favorite toys, spaces, and change of clothes are all in one place. You don’t have to worry about packing up everything you need ahead of time!

3. You want to document your family’s routines

How you live your lives as a family changes as your kids age. Being home for your photo session gives you the option to capture daily routines such as breast feeding, playing in a nursery, reading stories in a rocking chair, or something as simple as meal time together.

4. You want to incorporate more personal touches

In-home family sessions are a perfect opportunity to incorporate personal touches into your session. Whether it’s a favorite blanket, a beloved pet, or a cherished heirloom, these items can add depth and sentimentality to the images. I can help you think of items to gather before your session to prepare too!

5. You have a newborn

It is okay if you are not quite ready to step out into the world to get your baby’s first months of life documented. A great alternative to newborn studio sessions would be to make your home your studio! Not only will your newborn be comfortable, but so will you.

6. You want to dress comfortably

Especially in the winter, nothing says cozy home photos like sweaters and sweatpants. This is especially important for growing families where expecting mamas want to show off their bellies. While color palettes and style are still important, it is certainly easier to dress cozy poses on the couch than outdoors or in a studio.

7. You want more family members to be included

Finally, maybe it is just a perfect combination of all of the above, but your parents are also in town. While parents and grandparents are always welcome in traditional photo sessions, sometimes it is more comfortable to do a session at home and have them in a few photos. Having more family in your photos is going to make for some extra special memories! To book your in-home family session in the Washington, D.C., Virginia area, please fill out my contact form. I can’t wait to work with you!
