Engagement sessions are one of my favorite parts of being a wedding and engagement photographer in Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. They’re the perfect way to celebrate this season of life while also getting comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. What to Wear
Your outfits should feel like you but just a little more polished. I always suggest one dressier option and one more casual outfit for variety (I have a changing tent to help with seamless outfit transitions!) Flowing dresses photograph beautifully, and neutral or muted tones tend to keep the focus on your connection. Layers and accessories also add movement and interest. Hair, Makeup & Glow
Engagement photos are the perfect excuse to pamper yourself a little. Many couples use this session as a chance to test out their wedding hair and makeup trial because it’s a great way to see how your look photographs. If a full trial isn’t in the cards, consider getting your makeup done professionally or curling your hair so it feels extra special. And for winter sessions when the sun isn’t as generous, a subtle self-tan can add a gorgeous glow that photographs beautifully.
Choosing the Location
Not sure where to go? Don’t worry! I’ll help pick the perfect spot based on the vibe you’re going for. Whether that’s the cobblestone streets of Old Town Alexandria, the monuments in Washington D.C., or a quiet nature trail in Northern Virginia, we’ll find a backdrop that fits your story.
Relaxing in Front of the Camera
You don’t need to worry about stiff poses because I’ll guide you every step of the way. My focus is on your connection, laughter, and those in-between moments that really feel like you. Think of it as a fun date with a photographer tagging along.
Extra Tips
- Bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots.
- Pack a small bag with essentials (lipstick, water, or a jacket if it’s chilly).
- Plan to grab coffee before or dinner after to make it a full date.
- If it’s a sunrise session, prep outfits the night before and get plenty of sleep.
